Dr. Zogby Addresses Members of the Foreign Press

On Wednesday, November 5, Dr. Zogby addressed members of the foreign media and shared some initial thoughts about this election, and what the future may hold, both for the new administration and for the world at large.

“I think that from the responses I’ve gotten just in the last 12 hours since this election ended, it’s very clear that people feel a tremendous amount of hope and a sense of America turning a page. I’ll talk about that in a minute in terms of expectations and the danger even that some of these very high expectations may present to a new president, but nevertheless they’re there. And some of the ill will that has been felt toward our country over the last several years, people wanted to feel differently and now find a reason to feel differently about America.”

‘Obama is Arab’ and other absurdities

Since beginning his run for the White House, Barack Obama has had to contend with a viral e-mail campaign that has portrayed him as unpatriotic and a foreign implant out to subvert America. At first dismissed as the work of “quacks”, the effort continued and, sadly, has had some effect. As reported by Politico, these e-mails, while absurd, have come to be believed by some.

Obama at AIPAC: Some Doubts Eased, Others Created

As is their wont, hard-line supporters of Israel have been pushing Barack Obama quite hard. He is, to them, an unknown commodity with questionable ties. Progressive Jewish opinion, on the other hand (and Arab Americans, as well), finds Obama appealing both because of his messages of hope and change and, specifically, because of comments he has made that indicate openness to a more nuanced discussion of Arab-Israeli peace-making. They latched on to, for example, comments he made to Jewish leaders in Cleveland on February 24th, where he appeared to reject identifying being pro-Israel with “adopting an unwaveringly pro-Likud view of Israel,” and his statement to a Jewish reporter that “in order to make progress in Arab-Israeli talks…both sides should be held accountable to previous agreements.”

McCain at AIPAC: 2002 Fantasy, 2008 Disaster

John McCain, who fashions himself a strong supporter of Israel, addressed AIPAC this week. His hawkish denunciations of Iran, Hamas and Hizbullah, and his dire warnings of threats against the state of Israel were well-received. So, too, was his mockery and mischaracterization of Barack Obama’s calls for a realist-based foreign policy that, while tough on adversaries, places an increased emphasis on the use of diplomacy – something sorely needed in the Middle East.
